Prefabricated Data Center

A Prefabricated Data Center is a data center solution in which major infrastructure components are manufactured, assembled, and tested in a controlled factory environment before being transported to the deployment site.

Unlike conventional site-built data centers, prefabricated data centers shift a significant portion of construction and system integration from the site to a controlled manufacturing environment. This approach can improve manufacturing consistency, simplify on-site installation, and support faster deployment.

Prefabrication can be applied to different data center architectures, from compact micro data centers and containerized systems to larger modular infrastructure.

Key Characteristics

Prefabricated data centers typically have several defining characteristics:

  • Factory integration: Major infrastructure systems can be assembled and tested before delivery.
  • Standardized manufacturing: Repeatable processes can improve consistency and quality control.
  • Reduced on-site work: Factory integration can reduce construction and system integration requirements at the deployment site.
  • Rapid deployment: Pre-integrated systems can shorten installation and commissioning time.
  • Scalable architecture: Multiple prefabricated modules can be deployed or expanded according to capacity requirements.

The degree of prefabrication varies by solution. Some systems may arrive as highly integrated modules, while others combine prefabricated components with site-built infrastructure.

Common Applications

Prefabricated data centers can support a wide range of deployment requirements, including:

  • AI infrastructure
  • Enterprise data center expansion
  • Edge computing
  • Remote and distributed IT
  • Telecom infrastructure
  • Rapid capacity deployment
  • High-density computing environments

The appropriate configuration depends on IT capacity, power availability, cooling requirements, site conditions, deployment timeline, and future expansion plans.

Prefabricated Data Center vs. Modular Data Center

The two terms are closely related but are not identical.

Prefabricated Data Center describes how infrastructure is manufactured and deployed—with major components or systems produced and integrated off site.

Modular Data Center describes an architectural approach based on modular components that can be deployed, combined, or expanded as needed.

A modular data center can therefore be prefabricated, and many prefabricated data centers use modular architectures.

In simple terms:

Prefabricated = manufacturing and deployment approach

Modular = architectural approach

This distinction is useful when evaluating data center solutions because prefabrication and modularity can be used together but describe different characteristics.

Prefabricated Data Center vs. Container Data Center

A Container Data Center is a specific physical architecture that uses a shipping container or purpose-built containerized enclosure to house data center infrastructure.

A container data center can therefore be prefabricated, but not every prefabricated data center is containerized.

Prefabricated solutions can also use rack-level systems, shelters, purpose-built modules, and other architectures.
