An Intelligent PDU (also called Smart PDU) is an advanced power distribution unit that delivers real-time monitoring, remote control, and detailed power analytics at the rack or individual outlet level. Unlike basic or metered-only PDUs, intelligent models combine precise energy measurement with network connectivity, environmental sensing, and outlet-level switching capabilities.
Intelligent PDU Types
- Metered PDU: Continuously measures voltage, current, power, and energy consumption at the inlet or circuit level, providing essential visibility for capacity planning.
- Monitored PDU: Adds detailed per-outlet or per-phase metrics, threshold alerts, and historical trending to support proactive power management.
- Switched PDU: Enables remote on/off control of individual outlets, allowing operators to reboot locked devices or manage power sequencing without physical access.
- Managed / Outlet-Level PDU: Combines full monitoring with switching and often integrates environmental sensors (temperature, humidity, door status) for comprehensive rack-level oversight.
Intelligent PDUs play a critical role in modern data centers by enabling accurate load balancing, preventing overloads, supporting energy-efficiency initiatives, and reducing the need for on-site interventions. In high-density environments they become especially valuable for tracking the rapidly changing power draws of GPU Servers and AI Accelerators.
Intelligent PDU and ATTOM
In Attom Technology’s modular and high-density deployments, Intelligent PDUs provide the granular power visibility and remote control needed to safely operate dense racks while maintaining tight energy accountability. When paired with AgilePower systems and integrated into the overall monitoring architecture, they help operators optimize power usage, support precise capacity planning, and maintain reliable uptime across both traditional and AI-ready infrastructure.
