What Akash Systems’ Diamond...

A recent announcement from Akash Systems has caught the attention of the data center industry: the launch of the world’s first diamond-cooled AI servers, powered by AMD Instinct™ MI350X GPUs and manufactured with MiTAC Computing.

At first glance, this might sound like a niche hardware innovation. In reality, it reflects a much larger shift happening across AI infrastructure: thermal management is moving closer and closer to the chip.

Why does this matter?

The rapid growth of AI workloads has dramatically changed the power density inside data centers.

Just a few years ago, a typical rack operated at 10–15 kW.
Today, many AI clusters are already running at 40–60 kW per rack, and next-generation systems are expected to exceed 100 kW.

At these levels, traditional air cooling struggles to keep up. The industry has responded with technologies like direct-to-chip liquid coolingimmersion cooling, and rear-door heat exchangers. But the Akash Systems announcement suggests the next frontier: improving heat transfer directly at the chip interface.

Why diamond?

Diamond has one of the highest thermal conductivities of any known material — roughly five times higher than copper. By inserting a diamond heat-spreading layer between the GPU and the cooling system, heat can move away from the silicon much faster.

According to the company’s announcement, this approach could deliver:

  • GPU temperature reduced by ~10°C
  • AI compute throughput increased by ~15%
  • FLOPs per watt improved by ~22%
  • Stable operation even at 48°C (120°F) room temperature

If these results scale in real deployments, the implications are significant.

The bigger industry trend

The data center cooling stack is rapidly evolving from room-level cooling → rack-level cooling → chip-level cooling.

In other words:

Cooling is no longer just about the facility. It is becoming a core part of server architecture and silicon design.

This evolution is being driven by three converging pressures:

  • Exploding AI power density
  • Energy efficiency requirements
  • Infrastructure constraints in hyperscale facilities

Technologies like diamond heat spreaders, advanced cold plates, and microfluidic cooling are all attempts to solve the same fundamental problem: removing heat from AI processors faster and more efficiently.

What this means for data center infrastructure

For facility designers and operators, the key takeaway is clear.

As chip-level cooling technologies improve, the role of traditional room-level cooling systems may gradually change. Future data centers may rely more heavily on liquid distribution, heat capture, and energy reuse, while less heat is released into the air environment.

In short, the industry is moving toward a world where thermal management starts at the silicon and ends at the grid.

The Akash Systems announcement may not reshape the market overnight, but it highlights an important direction for AI infrastructure:
the next breakthroughs in data center efficiency may come from materials science as much as mechanical engineering.

For anyone working in AI infrastructure, cooling technology is no longer just an operational detail — it’s becoming a strategic differentiator.
